Minerals FAQs

What is a mineral?

Minerals are inorganic substances that are essential for maintaining various bodily functions. They play important roles in supporting bone health, regulating fluid balance, transmitting nerve impulses, and many other physiological processes. Unlike vitamins, minerals are not produced by living organisms and must be obtained through the diet.

There are two main types of minerals: macrominerals and trace minerals. Macrominerals, such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium, are needed in larger amounts, while trace minerals, such as iron, zinc, and selenium, are required in smaller quantities.

What foods are minerals?

Minerals can be found in a wide variety of foods. Here are some examples of foods that are rich in minerals:

  • Calcium: dairy products, leafy greens, fortified plant-based milk, and tofu.
  • Potassium: bananas, potatoes, avocados, and spinach.
  • Iron: red meat, poultry, legumes, and fortified cereals.
  • Magnesium: nuts, seeds, whole grains, leafy greens, and dark chocolate.
  • Zinc: oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, and nuts.
Including a diverse range of nutrient-dense foods in your diet will help ensure you're getting an adequate intake of minerals.
